Thai Bible Translations

I've found it very hard to find centralized information on Bible translations into the Thai language. Karl Dahlfred's article A Brief Survey of Thai Bible Translations prompted me to summarize my initial findings on Thai Bible translations. There is now a Wikipedia page on Thai Bible translations page which mainly has a good brief overview of the early history of Thai Bible translations.

If you have any corrections or additional information, please be in touch!

John Taylor Jones' Thai Bible, 1894 (THA-JTJ)

John Taylor Jones, an ABMU missionary, translated the New Testament into Thai language from Greek. Part of the Bible in Thai was first published in 1834, the New Testament in Thai was printed for the first time in 1843. The Old Testament was finished in 1883, and the first full collection of Bible texts in Thai came out in 1894.

Daniel McGilvary's Bible in Kammueang (Northern Thai language of the Tai Yuan)

Early 20th century Dr.Daniel McGilvary with others translated the New Testament and some books of the Old Testament in Northern Thai. But it fell in disuse, partly because of the government wanting to use the (Central) Thai language for the whole nation, partly because it was written in the Lanna (Northern Thai) script that few read, and partly because the Northern Thai Christian churches favoured Central Thai (also related to many other ethnic groups living in North Thailand with vastly different mother tongues).

Bible in Lao / Isaan (Baptist World Missionary Outreach Ministries, 2016)

Work initiated by New Tribes Mission started over two decades ago, a formal translation of the Majority Text, primarily targeted to uneducated rural rice-farming villagers, and was later carried on by the Baptist World Missionary Outreach Ministries. After completion of the first draft in 2012, it was rigorously checked and proofread against the original sources, and checked for language accuracy and by native speaking Christians. The New Testament came out in 2016. An audio version with Khaen music playing softly in the background has been completed. The translation is available in both Thai and Lao script online at www.LaoBible.net. A second edition is still being worked on in 2022. Paper versions are distributed without charge by Global Bible Translators.

This is the translation by Living Stream Ministry, the organisation of Witness Lee, probably the most literal translation in the Thai (I haven't seen it yet). Ordering information here: The Lord's Recovery in Thailand. Only the New Testament has been translated into Thai yet. All my attempts to order one have failed, the email on their website doesn't work anymore. A number of New Testament books can be listened to at termsook.com. They are using names patterned after the Hebrew pronunciation (มัดธาย for Matthew, โยฮัน for John), and some of the phrases used are different from other translations.

Good News for Modern Man

I've only heard about this version; apparently it uses more Roman-Catholic Thai words. (I've also heard that Roman-Catholics in Thailand also standardize on the Thai Bible Society's translations, although they have probably now switched to the ThCB.)
